Parents Action for Children is providing a unique training program for foster parents and kinship
care providers. The Parent Engagement and Self-Advocacy (PESA) training was developed by
Columbia University’s Center for the Advancement of Children’s Mental Health, Casey Family
Programs and the Annie E. Casey Foundation, and is made available in California through the
generous support of The California Endowment.
PESA is a 15-hour training program for foster parents and kinship care providers to
address the mental health needs of children in their care. This innovative program, in both
English and Spanish, includes a DVD, handbook and local resource guide, and engaging,
interactive and informative training activities. Each PESA training team is composed of a
family advocate, a foster parent or kinship care advocate, a social worker and guest
presenters, including birth parents, mental health professionals, and representatives of
school districts and children’s advocacy organizations.
